Carbon and composite table tennis blades have a fibre layer built in among the wood plies.

The fibre stiffens the blade and enlarges the sweet spot, so off-centre hits lose less speed. You get a faster, more forgiving blade, with a little less feel than an all-wood blade. Carbon is the most direct; arylate and aramid soften the response. Where the fibre sits matters too: inner-fibre blades feel closer to wood, outer-fibre blades respond more immediately.
